How Does Medicare Compare to My Employer Health Plan?

September 5, 2018 by John Bush

With employer offered health plans having changed in recent years, it is a smart idea to compare your employer health plan to that of Medicare plans. Since looking at plans can be confusing, I recommend looking at a few areas to compare. Below I have listed questions I would advise seeking answers to so you can best compare.

Questions to gather answers to about an employer health plan:
  • What is the Maximum-Out-of-Pocket of the plan?
  • What is the deductible of the plan?
  • What is the plan monthly premium?
  • Do you contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA)?
  • Do you have a network of certain doctors & hospitals to see? If so, are my doctors in network?
  • How much are prescription copays?

With these questions in mind, learn about Medicare Options.

Questions to ask about a Medicare Supplement Plan
  • What is the Maximum-Out-of-Pocket of the plan?
  • What is the deductible of the plan?
  • Will I have any copays?
  • What is the plan monthly premium?
Questions to ask about a Part D Prescription Drug Plan
  • What is the deductible of the plan? Does the deductible apply to all medications?
  • What will the copayments be on my medications
  • What is the plan monthly premium?
  • How do I compare plans and determine which could be a good fit for me?
Questions to ask about a Medicare Advantage Plan
  • Are my doctor(s) and hospital(s) in-network for the plan? If not, what costs would I incur?
  • Does the plan have a deductible?
  • What are the copays?
  • What is the Maximum-out-of-pocket for the plan?
  • What is the plan monthly premium?
  • If I travel, how would this plan work?
